Core Courses
There are 6 core courses that must be taken
in order to complete The Wilderness Experience Certificate
Programme:
One Wilderness Survival course is credited towards the
WECP. Clients are welcome to register in multiple survival
courses to master the best theoretical and practical bush
skills they require.

Wilderness Survival -
Winter
The winter course teaches students how to
cope with cold weather problems, skills required to construct
survival shelters, building and using traps and snares for
small game, some tracking, emergency signals, survival kits,
the preparation of food, tools, and fire-making. The fee covers
all costs except personal clothing, gear, food, and
transportation to and from the weekend survival site. The
course is 2 weekends in duration.

Basic Wilderness First Aid
This course is for anyone who spends time in
the back country. It will provide participants with an
introduction to wilderness first aid. Basic topics are covered
with an emphasis on practical skills, decision making, and
dealing with environmental conditions. Content includes:
patient assessment, shock, wound management, burns,
fractures/sprains, and first aid kits. Course is offered on
campus.

Wilderness Survival -
Spring
Seasonally oriented, this programme is
designed to immerse the student in a variety of wilderness
survival techniques. Specific areas of concentration will
include the identification and preparation of edible and herbal
greenery, basket weaving, primitive fishing, direction finding,
toolmaking, fire-building, constructing snares and deadfalls,
and coping with the seasonal problem of mosquitoes, black
flies, and deer flies. The fee covers all costs except
clothing, food, and transportation to and from the weekend
survival site. The course is 2 weekends in duration.

Canoe Camping
This course introduces the participant to
the most significant aspects of camping, both traditional and
lightweight, as they apply to canoe tripping. Topics of
discussion deal with preferred foods, environmental impact,
cooking techniques, suggested equipment, canoeing skills,
campsite selection, camping skills, group dynamics, and
sanitation. Pre-trip precautions are highlighted as well as
some post-tripping suggestions. Students supply camping and
canoeing items, personal gear, park registration fees, food and
transportation to and from site. |

Backpacking
This course addresses the pertinent aspects
of lightweight camping as they apply to backpacking into remote
campsites. Topics of discussion include ethical considerations,
suggested equipment, cooking techniques, food selection, menu
preparation, and trip organization. Participants supply camping
items, personal gear, park registration fees, food and
transportation to and from site.

Orienteering
This course will deal with the rudiments of
using some of the common types of maps, with emphasis on
topographic maps, the use of a compass, and wilderness
navigation by land and water. The workshop will be practical,
and stress point-to-point orienteering. Develop your newly
acquired orienteering skills by registering in the challenging
Bushwhacking course (Sept. 11-12). Ask instructor for

Introduction to Edible
Plants
This is a one-day workshop where you learn
to identify and use edible and medicinal wild plants found in
Central Ontario. Dress for the weather, bring a lunch, a
fishing or hunting knife for plant work, a notebook, and a
small plastic bag for collecting some plant samples.
Participants are encouraged to register in the Advanced Edible
Plants workshop (July 23-25). Ask instructor for details.

Wilderness Survival - Fall
This seasonally oriented programme teaches
the student survival skills under drastically changing
conditions during this time of year. You will learn how to
construct primitive traps and snares, enhance available
clothing for greater warmth, shelter construction, direction
finding, animal and food preparation, clothing selection,
hunting tools, personal survival skills, fire building, dealing
with hypothermia, and the psychology of a survival mindset.
Fees cover all costs except personal clothing, gear, food, and
transportation to and from survival site. The course is 2
weekends in duration.

| When booking the
services of Survival in the Bush Inc., a 50% non-refundable
deposit is required. The remaining funds are due 45 days prior
to course commencement. Medical reasons notwithstanding, should
the client withdraw from any course, a 50% cancellation fee is
automatically deducted from the full registration cost. If
withdrawing with less than 45 days notice prior to course
commencement, there is no refund. Survival in the Bush Inc.,
reserves the right to refuse a student's participation in any
course should safety become a factor. All courses are subject
to applicable GST and College Fees. |
